Modesto, Stanislaus County
George Lucas grew up in Modesto, and his 1973 film American Graffiti is set there on one night in 1962, when teenagers cruised downtown in their cars. The city has embraced the connection. A bronze statue of a young couple leaning on a 1957 Chevy stands at George Lucas Plaza, and a classic car parade rolls through town each June.
